The Susquehanna River 15 miles northwest of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, September 21, 2004. Normally, a river like this would look blue from 25,000 feet, but it was muddy brown, the result of heavy hurricane rains carrying the land into the water. The dark green strips trending toward the upper-right of the photo are forested ridges, the easternmost slopes of what is called the ridge-and-valley system, the most distinctive aspect of the Pennsylvania physical landscape. Farmland in this area often tucks into limited space in the valleys, as in the picture below. The sharp reader will note three aerial photos in the September set, proof of my enduring fascination with views of the earth from above – another aspect of the genius of flight.
